Recyclability potential of waste plastic-modified asphalt concrete with consideration to its environmental impact

Technique: Raman

Applications: Environmental, Polymers & Materials Science

Products: KnowItAll Raman Spectral Library, KnowItAll Software

This research investigates the feasibility of reusing old waste plastic-modified asphalt concrete for road construction, concentrating on four frequently discarded household plastics: high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The chemical makeup of the plastic samples was determined using optical photothermal infrared (O-PTIR) spectroscopy. The spectra of various plastics were then compared with those in the Wiley KnowItAll polymer spectra library, and the plastic types were confirmed if the match degree exceeded 70%.
