High microplastic and anthropogenic particle contamination in the gastrointestinal tracts of tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) caught in the western North Atlantic Ocean

Technique: Raman

Applications: Environmental

Products: KnowItAll Raman Spectral Library, KnowItAll Software

This study examines microplastic contaminants in tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) across various stages of life. Seven stomachs and one spiral valve from eight individuals captured off the United States Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts (eastern US) were examined and a literature review of publications reporting anthropogenic debris ingestion in elasmobranchs conducted.
Raman spectroscopy and μ-Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy was used in the analysis. Spectra were analyzed using the KnowItAll software with the Raman Spectral Library, along with other plastic databases.
