Raman Microscopy for Detecting Counterfeit Drugs — A Study of the Tablets Versus the Packaging

Technique: Raman

Applications: Forensics & Toxicology , Pharmaceutical & Biotech, Quality Assurance

Products: KnowItAll Raman Spectral Library, KnowItAll Software

With the market for counterfeit drugs growing, it is important to be able to discover where the drug was manufactured. This can be done by analyzing the tablet, but the packaging can also provide a wealth of information.

This study by Horiba Scientific investigates if packaging materials can be analyzed and located to a specific manufacturer. KnowItAll software along with KnowItAll Raman Spectral Library was used to identify the spectra collected from the Horiba Scientific Evolution Raman microscope to confirm if compounds found in both tablets and packaging match with legal samples or if it was a counterfeit.
