Submicron IR and Raman spectroscopy for chemical identification of microplastics

Microplastics are encroaching on all aspects of the environment. The microplastics that have the potential to cause the most harm are <20μm in size. In order to overcome the limitations experienced by classic spectroscopy methods to examine microplastics in the μm range, the Photothermal Spectroscopy Corp. has used optical photothermal infrared (O-PTIR) spectroscopy coupled with Raman spectroscopy to analyze this size range. The spectra, obtained by the mIRage system, were imported into the KnowItAll Software and a simultaneous search against both the KnowItAll IR and KnowItAll Raman spectral libraries provided valuable insights into the composition of the microplastics analyzed.
