What's on that hair? Identifying surface contaminants using ATR-IR spectroscopy

Technique: IR

Type: Application Notes

Applications: Quality Assurance & Control (QA/QC)

Products: KnowItAll IR Spectral Library, KnowItAll Software

This application note shows how ATR-IR spectroscopy Wiley's KnowItAll software helped researchers solve a mystery in hair care testing. When treatment results looked off, spectral analysis against KnowItAll's spectral libraries revealed the hair samples were coated in an unexpected contaminant, calcium stearate, the same compound found in soap scum. Further investigation traced the problem back to washing the samples with bar soap and tap water instead of detergent and purified water. The case shows how infrared analysis combined with comprehensive spectral libraries can catch hidden lab errors before they derail an experiment.
